Designing a warm corner of the internet

I'll be upfront: I'm not a designer by trade, I come from the code side of things, so most of TenderNest's visual identity happened through trial and error rather than some plan I had fully formed on day one.

What I did know early on was what I didn't want. That default app look (bright blue accent, clean geometric sans-serif, tidy white space everywhere) is fine for a banking app. It's the wrong look entirely for something that's supposed to feel like a note someone left you.

So I went the other way. The colour carrying the whole thing now is a deep, warm maroon, closer to the colour of an old photo album or a letter that's spent a while sitting in a drawer than anything you'd normally see in an app. It shows up in the app itself, on the website, and it's even bled into the admin tools nobody but me ever looks at, mostly so the whole thing reads as one considered product instead of three different things wearing the same logo.

Typography took a while to land too. Ended up on Quicksand for headings, which has these soft, rounded letterforms, and it does a surprising amount of quiet work: rounded type just reads friendlier. Nobody consciously notices why. They just feel it, and I think that's kind of the point of good type choices generally.

None of this got locked in on the first attempt, for what it's worth. I'd pick a colour, live with it for a few days, decide it still read as a bit too corporate, and go again. Did that more times than I'd like to admit. Design choices like this feel like they should be a five-minute tick-box, right up until you actually try to get one right.
