Served Online Studio Ltd is one developer. This is what that actually means in practice.
I'm Joel Clarke. I've spent the better part of a decade building native mobile apps for other people's companies. Served Online Studio is where I build them for my own.
I came out of a Computer Science degree at Brunel and straight into app development — a placement year at Exploding Phone in 2017, then full time from 2019. Since then I've worked across Android and iOS, Kotlin and Jetpack Compose on one side, Swift and SwiftUI on the other, with PHP and MySQL behind both, for clients including NICEIC, Taylor Wimpey and Gas App UK.
These days I'm the solo lead developer on a white-label NHS health platform, rebuilt from a deprecated Xamarin codebase into two native apps and shipped under separate branding to different NHS districts. Being the only developer on something that size teaches you quickly which corners are worth cutting and which aren't.
Served Online Studio Ltd is where my own apps live. It's a one-person operation on purpose: the idea, the interface, the API, the store listings and the reply to your support email all come from the same desk.
The name comes from the first app I built by myself for my university final year project. The fork, knife and laptop stuck, and so did the habit of making software the way you'd send out a plate: finished, checked, and not before it's ready.
Solo lead developer. Rebuilt from Xamarin into native Swift/SwiftUI and Kotlin/Compose, with a reusable HealthKit and Health Connect framework behind it.
Sole Android developer, plus work on iOS and the PHP API. Used by 38,000 members, with in-PDF search and calculators for electrical engineers.
Custom PDF invoicing, a Bluetooth meter integration and a team calendar, across both platforms and the server API. 50,000+ downloads.
Real-time property search that sorted results into categories as you typed — Android front end and PHP API both.
Screens drawn before code. If the flow doesn't hold up on paper it won't hold up in an app.
Native codebase across iOS, Android and web, on a backend chosen to be boring and reliable.
Shipping is the start. Updates, store admin and support all stay with me afterwards.
